What You Need to Know About Oral Fluid Drug Testing

Lab based oral fluid testing is a great option for employers who want to see what’s in the employees system at the time of the collection.  While drugs take more time to pass through the system using a urine based test, lab based oral fluid tests will detect drugs within 30-60 minutes of the person’s last use.  The window of detection for drugs using a lab based oral fluid test is 24-48 hours.  The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) projects that in four years, 25-30% of all non-regulated drug tests will be conducted with lab based oral fluids.

The oral fluid collection is fast, simple, cost effective and performed under direct supervision.  The collection process can be done in as little as five minutes, and the specimen is immediately sent to a lab for testing.  If the results come back negative, the employer will see the results that day.  If the results are positive, the employer should receive them within 72 business hours.  Only a simple cheek swab is needed to collect the specimen, which almost every person can provide. Urine and hair collections can be tricky if there isn’t sufficient specimen, or the employee is not able to provide any.  Oral fluid collections can be performed on sight, saving time and money for the employer.  The employee will not have to worry about finding a collection sight in the area, also allowing the employer to keep his employees on sight at all times.  An added benefit is that it’s very hard to cheat an oral fluid drug test.
